The almost-over phone saga

On Saturday, I went to the Mommy & Me group in the park. I called my grandma to tell her we were coming over, then put my phone in my jacket pocket and threw my jacket over my shoulder. Duh.

Later that night, my dad called. Apparently, my step-sister had gotten a text message that someone had found my phone and turned it in at the library in the park. Dad had recently gotten a new phone and given the old one to her, and the person had texted "Dad."

On Tuesday, my Boompah (because he frequently walks to that park anyway) checked in at the library to pick up my phone. But they couldn't find it. He talked to a few people, they looked a couple places, but no phone.

I went that evening to see if they could find it for me (I didn't have a lot of hope, but Sweetie was very concerned that someone might have found it and started making long-distance calls, so I thought I'd better do what I could). Nope, they didn't seem to have it. I checked with the main office of the building too, but nothing.

I drove to Sprint and bought a new phone. At the time, they told me that the only way I could get the new phone was to re-up the contract for two years. I didn't want to do it, but they made it clear that was the only way. So I got a new phone and two years worth of contract.

Two days later the library called and said they had my phone. I went down there and picked it up (apparently it had been in a drawer that wasn't the lost and found box). Then I drove out to Sprint again. I tried to return the phone, and they said they could, but that they couldn't do anything about the contract. They suggested that I keep the phone and call customer care.

Today I called customer care. I initially got disconnected. Then I got through, but couldn't do anything because I didn't have the password. I called Sweetie and got it.

I called back. And then I gave them the biggest dose of "it's my HUSBAND's account and I really didn't have the authority to change anything and he was really mad when he found out and could you please..." She did it. Shit, are people's relationships like that? I mean, Sweetie wasn't happy about the contract thing, but it wasn't like "Woman, you can't change the contract!"

Anyway, now the contract expires in March '09 and I have to return the shiny red phone, but that's okay. I barely remember to take my phone with me anyway and rarely use it. I'm still pretty close to a Luddite in terms of cell phone usage. But I am glad to have my old phone back.

What does it say about my wardrobe that I considered being a Renaissance lady, a 70's stewardess, a psychedelic hippie, a flower child, a June Cleaver, and a goth kid, and wouldn't have had to purchase anything?

Superfantastic morning

WIth the obvious exception that this would all be better with my Sweetie, this has been a great morning. I got a phone call at 7 saying our band's song was going to be on the radio at 7:30. I have a workshop today, so I don't have to be anywhere until 9 (and the workshop location is super-close to the house). So I packed up Snuffleupagus and we went to Cafe Bernardo. They played the song right as I found free parking, so we sat and listened to it. Then we went into the cafe and I had a delightful breakfast, and Zadie ate half my toast. She LOVES her toasty bites. In fact, when I briefly stopped feeding her toast to put jam on my own slice, she did a little dance, like "Hey, I'm entertaining! Feed me that toast, too!" Then we came home and she ate banana, blueberries, and oatmeal. She's a good little eater. I put her on the floor briefly to post this, and she slipped and couldn't stand up, which pissed her off, so now she's nursing. I think she's beginning to make the sign for that, too. Except, instead of patting her own chest, she pats mine. Of course, it could be a coincidence, as she just likes to bang on my decolletage anyway...

Mom's here, gotta go to workshop!

Plus, what cheaply made bullshit, too, since I just bought these and they're my fat pants. And even though I've been really careful with my weight watchers, I only lost one pound. But I did manage to lose my cell phone (at least I know where it is -- at the public library. Thanks to the kind stranger who texted Dad and left it there).

Okay, lunch is over.

We have tests to give this week, grades to turn in, a workshop to attend (which means sub plans to make), etc. It's just busy and sucky and lame and I'm tired. And it's only Monday.

And I'm not done with Zadie's costume yet. And I have bills to pay and meetings to attend and and and. Whatever. I am just SO ready for a three-day-weekend and I found out Veteran's Day isn't even a three day weekend this year! It's on a freakin' Tuesday! Blast! Curses! Blistering barnacles!

And my booby pumping volume has gone down, which makes me worry that I'm losing my breastmilk since being at work.

Just cranky-headed. Blah.

Yard sign defaced!

So you know I feel strongly about the right to marry for gays. I mentioned that we got a "No on 8" yard sign a while back. At the time I got it, I felt good that I was doing the right thing, but at the same time, I thought - this will have no effect. I can't change anyone's mind, especially with the small number of people who will drive down our basically dead-end block.

This morning Sweetie came back from the grocery store and said "Did you see what someone wrote on our sign?" I started to feel righteous outrage. Someone would dare to deface our sign!
IMG_2193

I went to the far side and looked at it closely. Then I saw what it really said.
IMG_2194

So we did affect someone after all. Maybe we're not changing minds, but we're making a positive impact. Thank you, random Sharpie-using neighbor. We're all in this together.

Let me amend that to say that there is a rather large number of them who, given both hands and their own posterior, could not find the latter with the former.

And that is all I have to say on that. I think.

Jeff the arrythmic drummer part 1,345

Last night we went into a wee homemade studio to record a song. My uncle wants to get it playing on the local high school station (his son's a DJ there). Anyway, I got to see Jeff.

First, the guitarist, M@, was ribbing him about his drumming. He said "Hey, guys, I know you tease me a lot about my drumming, but..." He left off, but the implication was that it hurts his feelings. I said "Yeah. Plus, half of what I say goes over your head." He laughed and said "No, it doesn't." Shortly thereafter, he left the room, and M@ busted a gut laughing. "That was the best cut ever! He totally does miss half of what you say, and he didn't get that one, either!"

So, they were teasing M@ once about taking "copious notes" on something, and that ended up being the sort of default name of the band. To tell you the truth, half the time I forget we have a name at all. But last night Jeff goes "Man, I love the name of our band. I get to tell people the name, and it's cool 'cause it's Latin"
Me: What?
JTAD: You know -- it's Latin.
Me: No it's not. It's English.
JTAD: In what way?
Me: In the way that, if you were speaking English, you could say it and people would understand you.
JTAD: [Confused puppy look.]
Me: In the way that you could look in an English dictionary and it would be there.
JTAD: Copious?
Me: Yeah.
JTAD: What's it mean?

Anyway, I took Zadie to band practice, since we do as much bullshitting and sitting around as playing (not my choice, but whatever), but it was a bust. She cried in the car all the way out there, cried when the sound guy's wife held her, and cried all the way home.

*Incidentally, copious is from the Latin, and I told Jeff it might be. Also, I think of the name as kind of ironic, as the song we recorded last night has about three notes.

Second Saturday

Last night I got a wild hair that I wanted to go out on the town. I wrapped up the baby warmly and put on the Moby, then drove downtown. The heart of Second Saturday is around 20th and K, and I couldn't park any closer than 19th and G, even after driving around a bit. We went into several galleries, and there wasn't anything I loved, although there were some pieces in the place Monkeygirl and I always like that I was intrigued by. The baby wasn't too interested either, but she did enjoy staring at people. I ran into two co-workers (separately), three old school chums (together) and a host of zombies (in a parade). I was going where the zombie parade was going, so I just joined it. One zombie yelled at another zombie not to be too scary, because there was a baby. I said "It's okay; she eats flesh, too." As usual, she got a lot of attention. So did my Punks for Obama button.

After a while, I considered walking down to Rick's Dessert Diner, but got waylaid at Jodette's belly dancing studio, where several girls were performing, and as I skulked up to the door to see, Jodette invited us in. We sat and watched for a while. Then I figured it was getting too late for dessert, so we walked back to the car.

There's not too much going on around here. I missed MG's boyfriend's birthday party on Friday night, because I thought I'd be able to get the baby to sleep before I left, but she seemed to know something was up, and just WOULD not go to sleep. So there I was in my bowling shirt at ten thinking "Oh, for god's sake."

Well, off to call Mom for our usual Sunday date. I'm so glad she doesn't mind watching the baby all week and still giving part of her Sunday just to hang out with me. I'm lucky in so many ways.

Nothing blows my mind

the way this kid does. Six months ago she was a helpless peanut, and today she's standing, she's got teeth, she laughs, she blows raspberries, she eats food, she waves, and as of the 9th, she says "hi." This kid, this baby, this INFANT, this fricking miracle has picked up language. It is so much weirder than watching "The Wizard of Oz" and listening to "Dark Side of the Moon."

What do you think my chances are...

of getting a big group together to play Zombie Tag. ZOMG it sounds so much fun!!

Gah!

Copies, so many copies! Hours of copying. Reams of paper. Copies of only the even-numbered pages. Oh, copies.

Baby. Screaming. Teeth. Sound of the sewing machine sets off more screams. Fuss. Fussing. Fuss.

Politics. McCain says "my friend" and oh for fuck's sake. My friend, my friend, my friend.

Oh yeah!

We have teeth! Mom reminded me today that I hadn't posted it on the blog. Sometimes I worry about overwhelming you guys with baby facts, but still, that's a biggie. Mom noticed a tooth first and had me poke my finger in... she broke TWO teeth at once, both on the bottom in the front. You can't see them well yet, but they're both all the way through. To my relief, it hasn't had any impact (like biting) on the nursing.

I heard...

She stood up!

I changed her diaper, then went to rinse out the dirty one. When I came back, she had pulled herself to her knees (nothing new), but I thought "Gee, it looks like one of her feet is under her, like she's kneeling." And just as I thought it, she pulled herself up! I shouted for Sweetie to get the camera, and here's the result!

It just so happens that yesterday Mom and I moved the mattress down to a lower setting, since it looked like she was getting closer to pulling herself up, and I suppose we did it just in time!

I just can't believe how strong and clever she is.

Done!

It was driving me insane that I couldn't have all her books organized and couldn't really even get to all of them (some were at the bottom of a heavy box; others were on the top shelf of the closet). I didn't want to spend a lot on a bookshelf, though, since we're eventually planning to have bookshelves built in to the office. But I had to do something. So Monkeygirl accompanied me to Ikea today and we got a Billy bookcase.

Here were some of her books before:

Mind games

Which is what Sweetie is playing with Zadie these days. We have one of these foam dice (technically, a die or
D20"), and for some reason, Zadie is scared of it. The other day he was showing me that she was by rolling it at her and making her cry. Then he announced that it also makes her cry if he lays on it and then reveals it suddenly, if he puts her ball on top of it and it rocks when she tries to get the ball, or if he pushes it towards her. So I think we have established that she is, indeed, afraid of it.

This morning he calls me and says "Sneak in here and look at this!" Her ball had rolled behind the D20, so she was going to have to go past it to get her ball. She approached it, touched it, it rocked, and she backed up.

Is it funny? Yes. Is it traumatizing? Probably. I can only imagine that's what she was having nightmares about when she screamed bloody murder for 45 minutes last night. Which wasn't fun.

Is it wrong?

I don't think any of my students are stupid, but there are a few that I don't foresee coming back here in their own private helicopter to give us motivational speeches on how they gained their fame and success.

And by the way, I have a student with a really jarring name. I can't tell you what it is, but I can tell you that it's the equivalent of Pepe Saelee. Or Chuy Xiong. Or Pancho Vue.
