Thankful x 3
Well, I'm truly thankful for a lot of things this year, including my house in a time that people are losing theirs, a job in a time that unemployment is high, food when some are hungry, etc.
But there are three people in particular who are the pillars of my life, and who deserve extra-special thanks this year.
First is my mom. I am lucky a thousand times over to have her in my life. I was thankful for her when she was just my mom, the woman who took me to dinner every Sunday, who periodically sprang for something we needed around the house, who listened to all my rants and goofball theories, who knew just what I needed and when I needed it. But now she is my child's grandma and caregiver, and pretty much makes our life possible. Like, at all. But not only does she watch the baby five days a week (for free), not only does she provide her with everything she needs, she also teaches her, shows her the world, engages her, loves her, plays with her... She goes so far beyond care and nurturing that I'm not sure there's a word for it. And best of all? She always lets me be the mom, even though she sometimes spends more waking hours with Zadie than I do. I just can't express how wonderful she is or how lucky I am. I mean, to have a mom who is living, close, willing, and caring is so much more than most people have. I thank whoever there is to thank. Mostly my mom.
Second is my husband, Sweetie. It's amazing how the birth of a child can turn a man into a dad. He is regularly puked on, farted near, shrieked at, grabbed at, and cried on, and he takes it all in stride (well, all but pooping). He gets us up every morning and plays with her, and while I put my makeup on, I hear him singing to her and telling her stories. Today he was dancing with her (to Slayer). He has new nicknames for her every day. He delights in tickling her. Also, he has picked up my slack around the house since I now spend more time taking care of her. He is a great dad and a great husband, and I'm so lucky to have him.
And Zadie. She's brand-new this year. Isn't that amazing? There's a person in my life whom I didn't even know nine months ago, and now I couldn't live without her. She is just a baby, yet she shows me that she is brave, clever, smart, stubborn, funny, loving, curious, and affectionate. She shimmies backwards off the couch and bed. She sits and eats Cheerios. She kisses the baby in her book. She climbs all over me. She chases her ball. She tries to eat power cords. She says "La la la" and "Odwalla." She bounces when music comes on. She attempts to destroy the stereo. She likes kiwi. She recovers quickly from setbacks like falling down. She can move around the living room by standing and shuffling between the coffee table, couch, and chair. She's just amazing. I'm so thankful for her.
I'm multiply, multiply blessed.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, and I hope you have as much to be thankful for.

Leopard skin pillbox hat
This shows off Zadie's new hat. This picture is fron Saturday when we went to Apple Hill.
Today is the last day before a 5-day holiday, and it feels SO LONG. Only two more classes, and then I'm outta here!
Oh, and since I can't respond to blog comments from work: regarding the sign language, no, we don't know anyone who's hearing-impaired. The theory is, if she knows some simple signs, she will be less frustrated as she acquires language because she'll be able to express herself. Like, she'll be able to tell us if she wants milk, more, or a diaper chance. The Babysigns instructor also pointed out that it's a good way to quietly express something to the kids, too, like to remind them to say "thank you" or to tell them "no" in public. She's becoming very verbal, but I still hope it helps.

Signin'
Miss La-la-la apparently signed "flower" and "milk" today. Add that to nurse, water, and dog, and that's a total of five signs!

Fun day & cuteness
Yesterday was mega-fun. I met some of my friends from an online forum at Apple Hill, and the next 4 1/2 hours were spent at craft-shopping, face-painting, lunch-eating, pony-riding, pond-visiting, cider-press-watching, apple-buying... It's just squeaky clean fun. We had a great time. As an added bonus, one of the gals I met was originally from Sacramento, but lives in Chicago now. She brought an old friend, and it happened to be someone I knew! In fact, we had been through the grueling internship together, and I was always sorry we'd lost touch. We got to meet each others' daughters. Nice, right?
Oh, and for the Dylan fans among my readers (MB?), I bought Z a leopard skin pillbox hat. Okay, it's not skin, it's fleece, but still...
Zadie conked out on the way home, but when we got home, we had surprises! Sweetie had spent the day volunteering at REI, and he did some shopping, too. I got a new warm black V-neck shirt and a grey fleece pullover, and Zadie got one of those down vests -- I didn't even know they made them in Zadie size! She looks so rugged.
Then we went to Mom's house for pre-Thanksgiving. I really enjoy spending holidays with family, even if it's not the real day. Monkeygirl came over too (with a yummy pie). I got to talk to my cousins, and Zadie got to torment her cousin Grant. Unfortunately I missed what led up to him crying, but apparently she was just SO HAPPY to see him that she was flapping her arms, squealing, touching his face, etc. and it was too much for him. Later on he got more used to the idea of her and he let her chase him around the house. It felt so full of life to have the two babies crawling and toddling all over Mom's house. Anyway, dinner was excellent and we all ate too much. Zadie tried stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes (with formula instead of milk) and sweet potatoes. She also got to try out the baby spoon that comes with Mom's silverware. At the end of the evening, we opened Mom's, Boompah's, and Monkeygirl's birthday presents for Sweetie. Zadie crawled around with bows and drooled on the paper, but wasn't much help with unwrapping.
Finally, Zadie does LOTS of cute things. Seriously, as cute goes, she's got it in spades. But the thing she does that's slaying me right now has to do with a book. It's called "Moo, Baa, La La La." It mainly is about animal noises ("The cow says moo."), but in the middle it asserts that singing pigs say "La la la." Then you, the reader, correct it, and it goes on. Finally, it says "It's quiet now. What do YOU say?" And at that point, Zadie almost always says "La la la."
On Zadie speaking, she's got a three-syllable word down. Mom's cat's name is Odwalla, and Mom told me the other day that she had taken Zadie outside to say hi to the cat. After saying "Hi Odwalla" herself, Mom heard the baby say "Hi Wala." Mom, surprised, said "What?" And then about twenty times in a row, the baby said "Hi A-wa-la." I still was slightly dubious - my not-quite-8-month-old was saying Odwalla? But last night when we were over there, Mom said "Why don't you go say hi to Odwalla?" In reply, Zadie said "Owalla... Owalla... Owalla." It was very clear. She didn't get the D in there, but I was impressed nonetheless.
Okay, all for now. Today is busy, too, with a Chuck-E-Cheese birthday party for Grant. Plus, I didn't get to clean, to errands, or cook my lunches yesterday, so I have to find a way to fit that in.

*Chirp*
*Chirp*
It is early Monday morning at 4 am, and I am hearing a sound definitely related to our alarm.
*Chirp*
I roll over. My husband is not in bed.
*Chirp*
I fall back asleep.
*Chirp*
It is Tuesday morning at 4 am. I hear the sound again. I hear my husband getting out of bed.
*Chirp*
I get up, too.
*Chirp*
It is coming from the end of the hall, but it's unclear whether it is coming from Zadie's room or Sweetie's office. Before I can figure it out, the chirping stops. Silence.
In the morning we discuss whether we should call the alarm company. The chirping seems to happen exactly at 4 am, when our heater is scheduled to come on. Perhaps it's detecting smoke? Carbon monoxide?
*Chirp*
It is Wednesday morning at 2 am. As I wake and check the time, I see that our heater theory is shot. Sweetie discovers that it is the smoke detector in Zadie's room. He takes the battery out when we realize it's the battery dying that causes the chirps. Problem solved. I purchase a new battery that afternoon and we replace it. We dust off our hands for a job well done.
*Chirp*
It is Thursday at 4 am. *Chirp* Sweetie gets up. *Chirp* Silence. He comes back to bed. It was the living room this time.
What I'd like to know is WHY, oh, why, god... must it be while we are sleeping. Seriously -- 4 days, three at 4 am, one at 2 am. Out of 24 hours in a day, wouldn't you expect our smoke detectors might start chirping while we're awake? What the hell?
And yes, in case you're wondering, I'm planning on buying a BUNCH of 9 volts and replacing them all.

We tried on hats
Well, the crowd that passed me at my breastfeeding extravaganza was estimated at 1500.
We went to a birthday party on Sunday at the neighbors'. They had a fun game I might steal that was a way of giving all the kids party favors. I still am not sure I'm behind party favors, but they seem to be de rigeur. The birthday boy got some sort of talking, dancing Elmo doll. It was abandoned while the bigger kids played with an elephant that shot butterflies out of its trunk, so Zadie and I wandered over to check out Elmo from a safe distance. She crawled a little closer to him, and the guy that was sitting next to Elmo pressed the tummy, which sent Elmo into action, at which point Zadie backed up rapidly. He settled down; she scooched forward; the guy pressed the tummmy; Zadie threw it in reverse. It was funny.
Tonight, she's been sticking out her tongue, and at one point she discreetly licked my decolletage.
She now enjoys kiwi and cornmeal pancakes.
We have a nice life.

There's nursing in public, and then there's nursing in...
PUBLIC with all caps and bold and italic and jazz hands.
So I went to a pro-gay-marriage rally today, and I didn't know it, but there was a march scheduled for afterwards.
During the rally, Zadie needed a little shade and a little boob, so we settled in a shady spot on the grass sort of behind the stage area. And then the march started. The organizers directed everyone to the park's exit, somewhat to our left. But then that exit sort of backed up and people began swarming across the grass where we sat. Essentially, I was sitting on the ground breastfeeding in the middle of a thousand(?)-person parade route.
I got several smiles, and one woman leaned down, put her hand on my shoulder, and thanked me for nursing in public, because it "makes it seem normal and natural." I thought that was sweet.
Anyway, that's my surprise nursing in PUBLIC story. =) Only me, huh?

The soon-to-be-chatterbox (if her head remains intact)
You wouldn't believe it, but she's SO close to being a wee chatterbox.
She actually says Mama, Dada, Hi and Bye (not every time, but often enough).
She says "ha" when we talk about her hat, "du" when we talk about her duck, "bah" when we talk about her ball and "buh" when we talk about her book.
The other day when Sweetie was reading her "Moo, Baa, La La La," she said "la la la" at the right part.
She also says Abba, agua, habla, hautbois, and Obama, although those may not be as intentional.
Unfortunately, she's experiencing enough head trauma that this may be it as far as language is concerned. Last night, she went down sideways once, then pulled the tray on the coffee table out and leaned on it and went down on the same side of her head. She also went flying backwards off the couch and I caught her, but I think it surprised her. By the way, I'm totally not neglecting her -- I watch her the whole time, but she's such a daredevil that all this happens in an instant!

Ah, the weekend
Well, on Friday we went to Maalouf's for our favorite dinner, then curled up at home. Saturday was cleaning day, and we pretty much stayed home all day and napped and read books and such until the evening.
A bit after 7, Z and I drove past the Capitol to see how the marriage equality rally was shaping up. It was a bit cold and there was no nearby parking, so we didn't stop.
Then we drove down J street towards the art galleries, and I found a perfect parking spot. We went to several galleries, including B Sakata Garo and Solomon Dubnick. I saw some things I really liked this time. We also heard a couple bands playing, and Zadie definitely danced to one of them (she was in a sling on my hip, but as soon as the band started, she began bouncing up and down enthusiastically). It was a much quieter Second Saturday than we've seen in a while. It was cool out, and many of the bands were indoors.
Then we went to 33rd Street Bistro. I generally like it there, but I ordered the "warm chocolate cake" last night and got one of those "molten" dealies where it's really just hot, raw cake batter. Well, I actually thought I'd be getting cake. I like batter as much as the next gal, I guess, but sometimes you just want cake.
As I got ready to leave, I saw the entire band Draw Pinky come in for dinner.
Today was pretty chill, too. I dressed her in her new outfit from Boompah, which happens to be forest green and navy and a little on the, well, boyish side. Everywhere we went, people commented on how cute "he" was. She was really flirting with everyone tonight. We went to Tres Hermanas and she sampled rice, guacamole, refried beans, zucchini and spinach. So she pretty much has now had Mexican food.
That's about all, I guess. There are some new pictures on Flickr of her in a new outfit from Grandma Jan and chewing on her shoes.

Haven't blogged about breastfeding lately
Hi y'all. I haven't blogged about breastfeeding because there've been no issues. Zadie's still a nursing champ, and the teeth have stayed well out of the way (except once -- ow!). I never thought I'd make it this far, so I don't have a next goal, except "when she quits." So it could be a month or a year. Whatever.
Anyway, I'm writing about it again because I've sprung a leak! During 4th period or thereabouts on three days this week, I've leaked through my boobie pad, through my bra, and through my shirt. Yesterday I threw my jacket on to cover it up and kept feeling phantom wetness on my jacket. I tried nursing Zadie on that side this morning, but it barely mitigated it. I don't know what's up. Do I need to use TWO boobie pads? Is that going to start looking funny? Do I need to pump before work? What the hell, dude?
Of course, for someone with my issues, any milk is good milk. Every day it happens, I'm like "Oh, crap! Better cover my boob! Heeeeyyy... I've still got milk!" So this is not an official complaint, just a "hmph." Actually, jus tlast week I was beginning to think that I might not have to wear the boobie pads anymore since it had been so long since I leaked. Whatever.
Now lunch is almost over and I MUST have something sweet. I'm out of Milky Ways and forgot to pack myself the Trader Joe's brand chocolate cats (like Teddy Grahams), so I have nothing to satisfy my sweet tooth. Maybe I can dig up enough change for a Diet Pepsi.
Take care!

Prop 8
California, I am so disappointed in you.
I wanted to live in a state that said no to discrimination, hate, and bigotry. I wanted to live in a state that believed in equality. I wanted to live in a state that recognized that all men are created equal. I wanted to live in a state that followed the Constitution regarding the separation of church and state.
But you said no. You wanted separation of church and state unless it's YOUR church. You want equality unless it's for something you don't like. You stood up en masse and said "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I don't care that it discriminates." You said you don't care about our fellow citizens and their love, their end-of-life issues, their property rights. You said fuck 'em.
This will be a longer fight than I hoped, but it is not over. Separate but equal didn't stand. The ban on interracial marriage didn't stand. This won't stand, either. Your hate can only do so much. Your bigotry can't trump the American ethos. Your discrimination will go the way of every other legalized discrimination in this country. But this morning, I am so disappointed.

Yes, we did!
I am so proud of our country today. And I can't believe we live in an era where my baby will never know an America that hasn't had an African-American president. Isn't that cool? Thanks, countrymen!

Halloween and the weekend
So we did dress her up as a kitty last night, although she was so darn fuzzy and engulfed in fur that it wasn't clear whether she was a kitty, an Ewok, a yeti, or a bunny. Whatever; she was furry and cute.
We went to Grandma and Boompah's first, where she Trick or Treated for a stuffed skull pillow. Then we went to Grandpa and Tia's, where I got yummy treats and Zadie got lots of attention. She was super-good.
Today we went to Sprint for the finale of the phone saga ("If we return this phone today, it's going to re-up your contract for two years." "No, that's not going to work.").
Then we went to Cafe Bernardo to phone bank for Obama. Why? Because he asked us to. We spent from 12:30 to a little after 3 calling people in Montana and Ohio. I had to take a couple breaks because we had the baby with us, and at the end she fell asleep and Sweetie took her and I did the calls until 3. But she was really quiet and well-behaved while we were there.
Afterwards, we went to Target, then to the Avid Reader (where we picked up several books), then to Javalounge, where I fed her and had a cup of tea.
Finally, we went to Kamon and had a delicious sushi dinner. Zadie ate more avocado that I would have thought possible. Now all three of us are in our jammies. We listened to the Mark Kermode film reviews, and that pretty much caps our evening.
There's stuff to do tomorrow, of course, including a birthday party for my niece, grocery shopping, more laundry, and hanging out with Mom (who has had food poisoning, so I hope she's better). But right now we are wrapped in blankets and it's raining out and I'm eating my weight in Bit O' Honeys. I'm about to read Zadie her new books. Life is good.
Oh, and we're getting a LOT closer to "mama" and when I said "banana" yesterday, she said "nana" back to me. It may have been coincidental, but I don't think so.
